What career are you in? What career were you in? Did you ever have a career? What… you don’t have a career! Are you ‘just’ a mom? On and on and on… this word has got to be one of the most loaded words on the planet, especially when it comes to being a mom.
What is it exactly? The current expectation of ‘having, being in a career’ is past its use-by date – it has literally expired and for a good reasons.
Years ago there were definite career paths – you didn’t question much, you didn’t lead your life – a company led it for it, you followed. There was a trail, a path and it led higher and higher up the ladder, but as many of us have found out, myself included, the path was not even in the right direction plus the destination was about 20 years’ away, so when you ended up somewhere, you discovered that you had followed the path without question, lured by the promise of prestige, a flash car and very big job title – and that was a career. That was me.
Except I found out that the ladder I thought I was climbing was leaning against the wrong wall and in the wrong place and my idea of ‘success’ and ‘having a career’ was exactly that – a flash car with house and job title to match ..ahhhh that’s what I thought was the golden way to live my life.
I had no time to stop but plenty of time to shop.
Ohhh no… time’s have changed.
We have the internet, we have more knowledge, and most importantly we have more questions.
With questions come opportunity – the opportunity to experiment, to explore, to go beyond, to discover, to try, to taste new things, to change, to adapt, to evolve, to expand, these are the questions that stir our soul and challenge our spirit, move our brain, make our heart sing, and give us our enthusiasm to embrace each day – this is what a career is – it is what moves us in this day.
It may change tomorrow, but this is being flexible, open, willing to change and chance it, the time is now for us to change rules, change definitions, change accepted past normal behaviours of what was right and wrong, old expectations that proved to dilute a sense of self.
A career now is based in our choices that we make that best serve our soul and our desire to live a fully rich life, with health and wealth, with love and joy, and with purpose and passion.
It is what makes us alive, and when we lose it we have the chance to find it again, something new about ourselves and the world, we have pressure we have demands but we have knowledge and resources and Feel Good School Mom is one place to help bring a space of connection and more joy to the world – especially the world of amazing school moms.
Having a career isn’t even a phrase anymore. Living your life fully and present is the new ‘career’. It includes women who are individual people who are wanting to find self-expression and self-development as we explore and expand our thinking and options, and be excited in our life.
As school moms we are evolving with experience and exhaustion.
As part of being a school mom, we are always exploring new ways of doing things and extending our on-the-spot solution making when dealing with screaming or silent frustrated kids of different ages.
Men who are not part of the school mom world do not know what is involved. How could they? I didn’t know about it until I was in it.
It is time for school dads to be part of the conversation, but first they need the understanding – they need to know what is actually involved - and Feel Good School Mom is here to help share the knowledge!
