When you think about the size of our eyes, they are such a tiny surface area – and it is costing us billions of dollars every year. And this is exactly the point of this article – it is COSTING us big time at the expense of us MAKING MONEY.
Getting ‘extra glow’ is something I love – especially with the sleep drought I have experienced for the past several years! The only problem is that I literally bought into the real-life pressure of thinking that the latest makeup and skincare products would be my total answer to feeling good.
My extra glow was costing me money, and when I found out the real cost, my glow faded quickly when I saw how little money I had.
Even though I have refined the time I spend doing my makeup from my pre-school kid time of 40 minutes to my lightning 3 minute school run-style, I like wearing makeup. (but it’s not that my fast makeup always works as I want it to all the time as you can read about here as one my early blips on the school run!)
I like to have my skin moisturised and my hair as frizz-free as possible and clean - and brushed! That is seriously a thing. It still amazes me that after 8 years of school runs, I have some days where, after running out of the front door and into the car, I sit at the steering wheel for one second and ask myself if I have brushed my hair!
I see my hair, skin and face care as a wonderful investment in myself BUT I had no idea I was 'investing' and spending thattttttt much! I was missing out on investing in my 'money care.'
Are you spending or making money?
I had never heard of MAKING MONEY as a girl and as a woman. I knew that you made money in your job, but most of it got spent on going out, eating out, makeup, rent and living expenses with a bit of savings.
As a girl I had heard of compound interest in one lesson during 14 years of school, but I definitely heard more about SPENDING MONEY on eyelashes, eyebrows, makeup, shellac for finger and toenails, skincare, bodycare and haircare products.
When will I be beautiful?
The messaging for us as women about 'being beautiful' is constant. It is so easy for us to believe it because we have heard it for so long – ‘if you buy buy buy, and get this new new new product, guess what… you will eventually end up beautiful but…. not quite because guess what again…. there is another new product for your – hair, skin, face, eyes, lips, chins, cheeks, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails, legs, toes, arms, and tummy that needs ‘upgrading’ and ‘fixing’.
The whole message is designed to make women feel that they need to look a certain way to be ‘acceptable’ to be ‘beautiful’ – which of course is never enough.
The more we spend the less we have
The more that women feel and believe that they will be more beautiful if they just buy and try one more product, the more we will spend - which was me!
The more we spend, the less we save.
The less we save, the weaker our financial position.
The weaker our financial position, the more vulnerable we become.
The more vulnerable we become, the less choices we have.
The less choices we have, the less power we have to do what we want.
The less power we have, the more power others who have money become.
The less power we have, the less options we have.
The less options we have, the less we can live how we want as we have to rely on someone else for money.
My Makeup Shakeup
The challenge for me was to realise that even though I liked to wear makeup with mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush and foundation, did I need to keep buying expensive new products for every new season – new improved products for my face, skin and eyes? And the big answer was ‘Absolutely Not,’ which is why I have calculated that I have spent over $15,000 on makeup alone for the past 20 years, which is the whole reason for this sharing of my wake-up call.
Something I wished I had known... was to add spending money on my 'Money Care' in addition to what I was spending on my 'Skin, Hair and Body Care'.

What is that?
Everything I have written so far! Plus so often the products simply have not worked on my skin, or the colour is different to what it looked like in the packet - seriously! And because I have spent money on them, I can’t bear to throw them away, and so another layer gets added to my makeup draw Omg! and then there is my haircare spend. For hair products that I have left in the bathroom cupboard, I guess I have spent about $2,000 in 20 years, so it really is my makeup that is most shocking to me.
Two Questions that Helped Me
Here are two questions that helped me to figure out the money figures I was spending, and they may help you:
How much is your makeup draw worth at the moment?
How much would you spend on makeup, haircare, skincare and bodycare on average per month and how much would that total in one year?
These are big questions because they go to the heart of every woman who is spending and may not be aware of just how much is being spent.
This led me to ask myself the question ‘What if I had thought differently about what I spent my money on earlier in my life?’ The answer…I would have had a lot more money earlier with so much less stress, and a stronger sense of my self.
The 'Man Money Message' that Women Missed
This whole journey has made me reflect on the differences in messages that men receive from women. My observation is that men are encouraged to make money and learn to be financially strong earlier on in their lives which is so different to females. For example, their thinking typically tends to be:
Men don’t think if they are beautiful or not
They don’t think about getting more beautiful
They don’t think I am not beautiful enough
They don’t think I need to fix something on my face and body to make me beautiful
They don’t think about spending billions of dollars on their face and body to get more beautiful
And as they don’t spend time thinking about it, they don’t spend money doing it
And as they don’t spend money on it, they spend money making money.
There are so many companies trying to sell women more and more products, treatments and advice. It’s all about making more and more money from women simply not thinking they are good enough as they are. And if we believe it, then we will spend more and more, but it is making us bankrupt. The only thing that makes this happen is because we don’t realise that this is happening.
This old message is all about the never-ending spend. It’s old fashioned. It’s ridiculous. It’s derogatory. And it’s making us poor and not feeling good – emotionally and physically – so we keep spending more to make us feel better! Those companies are counting their cash at our expense literally.
Time for Feel Good Change – The Message for Making Money
Now it is time for a new message and a new rewrite of the beauty definition. The simple truth which is that we are already beautiful and beautiful enough. End of discussion and so we can move onto talking about something else ..making money.
It’s about how we have a choice to change. It’s all about making money.
Feel Good School Mom is all about the new message of making money for women and helping women of the world - great grown up girls – moms and mums - to make money by spending money on ourselves that makes us stronger not weaker – emotionally and financially.
This is about spending your money on yourself – but the difference is spending it on yourself to make money.
It is time for us to reconsider our thinking and money actions, and consider putting our money into our 'Make Money Account' rather than the bottomless makeup up draw.
This means new ideas and new messages that make us feel good and not bad about how we look.
It’s all about choices. We can choose a new choice. We can choose the thinking that makes us feel good already.
We can think that we are already beautiful as we are, and that being beautiful is different to the corporate cash definition of one fictitious beauty standard.
Buy into new thinking, so you can spend less on other products and spend more of your money making money.
We are naturally smart thinking individuals, and now we can use our natural smarts to make money by spending money on ourselves in ways that make us richer.
This is what this is about – it is time to be loud and clear about making money for women.
